How to choose an AI coding tool
Start with the job you need to finish, then compare the details that affect your result.
- Write or change code
- Try a small task in a real repository. Check whether the assistant follows project conventions and can explain the files it changed.
- Review a change
- Use a pull request with a known issue and inspect the feedback. Look for actionable comments tied to the changed behavior rather than a large volume of style suggestions.
- Build an application
- Confirm that you can inspect and export the source, configure the backend and deploy to your chosen host. Try modifying the generated project after the initial demo.
- Integrate a model API
- Compare supported models, authentication, usage visibility and error handling. Test request limits and failure behavior before relying on a gateway in production.
Before you choose
- Validate the output. Run the project’s checks and review the diff. A plausible explanation or successful generation does not establish that a change works.
- Fit your development environment. Check editor, operating system and repository support. Evaluate setup time and whether the tool can use your existing build and test commands.
- Control access and costs. Review repository privacy, terminal permissions and approval settings. Compare included usage with the tasks your team actually runs.
Common questions
How is a coding agent different from autocomplete?
Autocomplete suggests code as you type. A coding agent may inspect multiple files, run commands and implement a broader task. Check which actions require your approval.
Can an app builder replace normal code review?
Review generated source, data access and dependencies before shipping. Confirm the behavior with realistic inputs and the same checks you would apply to other code.
What is a useful first evaluation task?
Choose a small, representative change with a clear expected result and existing checks. Compare the final diff and validation evidence, including any manual corrections you needed.
